Buying a drum kit is a great step when you want to learn how to play drums or are ready for a better instrument. But which drum kit is right for you? Do you choose an acoustic drum kit or an electronic one? And what should you look out for regarding size, quality, and price?

In this blog, we explain step by step how to choose the right drum kit. This way, you will know exactly what to pay attention to and avoid buying a drum kit that later turns out not to be quite right for you.

Buying an acoustic or electronic drum kit?

The first choice is between an acoustic and an electronic drum kit. Both types have their own advantages.

Acoustic drum kit

An acoustic drum kit is the traditional drum kit with real drums and metal cymbals. It provides a powerful and natural sound. This type of drum kit is especially suitable if you like playing with other musicians, want to play in a band, or have enough space to practice without causing noise disturbance.

Advantages of an acoustic drum kit:

  • a natural and powerful drum sound;

  • a real playing experience;

  • suitable for rehearsals and performances;

  • many possibilities to add or replace components.

However, an acoustic drum kit does make quite a lot of noise. Therefore, take your neighbors, housemates, and the space in which you are going to play into account.

Electronic drum kit

An electronic drum kit consists of drum pads connected to a sound module. You hear the drum sound via headphones, an amplifier, or a speaker. This allows you to practice much more quietly than on an acoustic drum kit.

Advantages of an electronic drum kit:

  • practicing with headphones;

  • various drum sounds available;

  • often more compact than an acoustic drum kit;

  • easy to connect to a computer or recording software;

  • convenient for home use and drum lessons.

An electronic drum kit is a good choice if you want to play drums at home and have to consider others. Do keep in mind that hitting the pads and using the bass drum pedal can still cause contact noise, especially on a wooden floor or in an apartment.

Which drum kit is suitable for beginners?

As a beginner drummer, you don't immediately need the most expensive drum kit. It is especially important that the drum kit is sturdy, comfortable to play, and complete enough to practice properly.

A standard drum kit usually consists of:

  • a bass drum;

  • a snare drum;

  • one or more toms;

  • a floor tom;

  • a hi-hat;

  • one or more cymbals;

  • stands and pedals.

Pay close attention to what exactly is included with the drum kit. With some drum kits, the cymbals, drum throne, or pedals are not included. As a result, a cheap set can end up being more expensive than you anticipated in advance.

For children, there are special junior drum kits. These are smaller and therefore more accessible. An adult-sized drum kit can be too large for a young child, making it harder to learn good posture.

How much space do you need for a drum kit?

Before buying a drum kit, it is wise to measure the available space. An average acoustic drum kit, including the drum throne and sufficient room to move, requires approximately 2 by 2 meters. A compact electronic drum kit usually takes up less space and can often be partially folded.

Preferably place the drum kit on a sturdy drum rug. This way, the bass drum, pedals, and stands are less likely to slide away while playing. A rug also helps protect your floor.

What should you pay attention to when buying a drum kit?

There are a number of important points you can check before making a choice.

1. Playing feel

A drum kit should feel comfortable. The height and position of the drums or pads should be easily adjustable. With an electronic drum kit, mesh heads usually feel more natural and are quieter than hard rubber pads.

2. Sturdiness

Check if the stands, pedals, and connections are sturdy. A drum kit that shifts or wobbles while playing can quickly become an annoyance.

3. Sound

With an acoustic drum kit, the sound is determined by, among other things, the shells, drumheads, tuning, and cymbals. With an electronic drum kit, it is mainly the sound module that determines which sounds and features you get.

4. Expansion possibilities

You might want to add an extra cymbal, tom, or other pad later. Therefore, check if the drum kit is easy to expand and if individual components are available.

5. Completeness

Always check whether you are buying just a basic set or a complete package. Consider, for example, a drum throne, sticks, pedals, cymbals, headphones, or an amplifier. When in doubt, ask for advice so you can start playing immediately after purchase.

How much does a good drum kit cost?

The price of a drum kit depends on the type, the brand, the materials, and the included components. A simple beginner's drum kit is usually cheaper, while an extensive electronic drum kit or professional acoustic drum kit requires a larger investment.

Do not just look for the lowest price. A slightly more expensive drum kit that is sturdier, plays better, and lasts longer can ultimately be a wiser purchase. Determine your total budget in advance and don't forget to include any accessories.

What accessories do you need?

In addition to the drum kit itself, you may need a few accessories:

  • drumsticks;

  • an adjustable drum throne;

  • a drum rug;

  • hearing protection for an acoustic drum kit;

  • headphones or a monitor for an electronic drum kit;

  • a drum key for tuning acoustic drumheads;

  • bags or cases if you want to transport the drum kit.

A good drum throne is especially important. With the right seating height, you play more comfortably and reduce the chance of developing poor posture.

Trying out a drum kit first

Specifications and online reviews provide a lot of information, but ultimately, the feel of playing is personal. That is why it is wise to compare different drum kits and, whenever possible, try them out yourself.
